Hamptons Designer Showhouse Caumset: Historic Elegance Meets Coastal Whimsy
Project Overview
We transformed a guest suite at the historic Caumsett estate in Lloyd Harbor into a captivating example of how historically significant Long Island properties can embrace vibrant design while honoring their architectural heritage. This project for the prestigious Caumsett Designer Showhouse demonstrated LGC’s ability to weave together historical reverence, coastal inspiration, and Lori’s signature "sophisticated whimsy" approach within one of the region's most storied properties. The showhouse took place in 2020 at the historic Summer Cottage on the grounds of Caumsett State Historic Park Preserve.
The Design Vision
Caumsett's rich history as a former Marine Biology Center provided unexpected inspiration for the design direction. During the renovation process, we discovered vintage fish photographs that had been left behind by marine biologists who once used the property for their research. These serendipitous finds became integral to the room's narrative, and I carefully preserved and incorporated the scientific illustrations into the overall design scheme.
Lori took those pictures, framed them, and used them throughout the room. She not only displayed them as art but also created fish motifs in the bathroom wallpaper based on the original artwork. This personal connection to the property's history exemplified LGC’s approach to site-specific design that honors place and purpose.
In an extraordinary twist, Lori later discovered the personal significance of those marine biology photographs at a family gathering where she met the marine biologist who had originally created the fish calendar from which those images came. He had used the daily calendar pages to count down his time on a research ship, never knowing what became of his maritime countdown after he left Caumsett. It turned out she had framed all of those pictures.
Coastal Elegance and Whimsical Details
The design palette drew inspiration from both the property's waterfront location and its romantic history as a retreat built for "the love of his life." We selected colors and materials that reflected the coastal Long Island setting while honoring the property's legacy of love and natural beauty.
The suite featured colorful silk grasscloth from Wallquest that provided rich texture and warmth while maintaining the sophisticated atmosphere appropriate for a historic estate. Luxurious textiles from Anna French Fabrics added layers of comfort and visual interest throughout the multi-room space. Blue, green, and hot pink accents created maximalism at its finest.
True to Lori’s design philosophy, she incorporated whimsical elements that made guests smile without compromising the space's sophisticated character. A charming bicycle and decorative umbrella referenced the romantic imagery of seaside picnics and leisurely days by the water, while maintaining the refined aesthetic expected in a showhouse setting.
The space showcased carefully selected furnishings from Universal Furniture that provided both comfort and elegance appropriate for the historic setting. Spectacular lighting fixtures from Hudson Valley Lighting created dramatic focal points, while window treatments with Kirsch Drapery Rods framed the estate's picturesque views. A plush area rug from Nourison anchored the seating areas and added warmth to the historic hardwood floors.
Honoring Architectural Heritage
Working within Caumsett's historic framework required careful attention to preserving original architectural details while introducing contemporary comfort and style. LGC’s approach demonstrated how historic properties can embrace personality and color without compromising their architectural integrity. The multi-room suite was designed to provide a complete retreat experience, balancing vibrant personality with the serenity necessary for true relaxation.
