Luis Barragán-Inspired Floral Tablescape at The New York Botanical Garden's Orchid Dinner

Project Overview

We were honored to create a Luis Barragán-inspired tablescape for The New York Botanical Garden's prestigious Orchid Dinner on February 27, 2025, at The Plaza Hotel. This elegant fundraising event, which supports the garden's invaluable orchid research collection, provided a wonderful opportunity for me to explore how architectural principles can be translated into intimate dining experiences that bring people together for a meaningful cause.

The Design Challenge

Creating a tablescape that would honor the legendary Mexican modernist architect Luis Barragán while complementing the natural beauty of the botanical garden setting required a delicate balance of bold architectural elements and organic botanical forms. We needed to capture Barragán's distinctive use of color and geometric forms while creating an inviting atmosphere for intimate dinner conversation among supporters of botanical research.

Collaborative Creative Process

Working in partnership with NY floral designer Angel Salazar Design, we brought together complementary expertise to realize this ambitious vision. Our collaboration allowed for a seamless integration of floral artistry and interior design principles, resulting in a cohesive tablescape that transcended traditional event decoration.

We found a wonderful creative partner in Angel Salazar Designs, and collaborating with Angel is always an exciting journey that brings our visions to life. Our partnership has blossomed into beautiful projects, including this Luis Barragán-inspired design and our show-stopping 6-foot peacock centerpiece named Monique for the Lenox Hill Neighborhood House Spring Gala. Monique was the talk of the event!

Architectural Inspiration Meets Botanical Beauty

The tablescape featured dramatic compositions that directly referenced Barragán's mastery of color and form. Magenta orchids provided stunning focal points, while golden-yellow branches added architectural height and structure. Deep burgundy florals created rich depth against the bold teal tablecloth, establishing a color palette that was both sophisticated and joyfully expressive.

We incorporated thoughtful geometric touches in the table settings that complemented the lush botanical arrangements, creating visual connections between the hard and soft elements of the design. This careful balance reflected Barragán's own approach to integrating natural and constructed environments.
